How does the title transfer work?
1. Remove all plates
All plates must be removed from your car prior to towing.
2. Return your plates to the DMV
License plates can be mailed to the DMV or dropped off in person.
Drop your plates off in person.
There are 3 ways you can drop off your plates:
A) Return them in person to any MVA branch office, including express offices.
B) Return them to any MVA authorized tag and title service.
C) Drop them in one of the MVA license plate return drop boxes. Currently, drop boxes with 24 hour access are located at the Baltimore City, Columbia, Gaithersburg, Glen Burnie, and Salisbury offices. Drop boxes are available during normal business hours at the Essex and Waldorf offices.

Sending them by certified mail with return receipt requested is recommended. Note: When you return the license plates, always include your registration card.
3. Cancel your insurance
Cancel your insurance after your car has been towed.
WARNING: Do not cancel your insurance until you are sure that the MVA has received your license plates. Failure to do so could result in a large fine. There is no fee for returning license plates.

There are two owners listed on the title, do we both need to sign?
Yes, both owners will need to sign the title.
Can I donate a car if the owner isn’t able to sign title?
Yes. You can donate the car as long as someone has power of attorney for the titled owner.In MD, we will need an original proof of address.
Do I need a license to donate my car?
You do not need a license to donate a car in MD
How can I donate my car without a title?
We can usually pick up a vehicle without a title in Maryland. We just need the registered owner to sign some paperwork for us.

There is an OR between our names, do both owners need to sign the title?
In MD, if there are two owners on the title with an OR between their names, only one owner needs to sign.
Can I donate a car in a deceased person’s name?
In most states, we will need original executive paperwork and a copy of the death certificate. In some states, the donor will need to get it titled in his name.
Can I donate an abandoned, junk, or scrapped car?
Kars4Kids does not accept abandoned cars. We can take cars that were salvaged or junked.
How can I replace my missing title?
If there is no title, Kars4Kids can usually apply for a duplicate title. Online

You'll be required to submit a copy of your valid state issued identification and complete an Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (VR-018)
In Person
Visit a local branch office. The request must include a completed Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title that has been signed by all vehicle owners. The duplicate title will be mailed the next business day to the address on record with the MVA.
