How does the title transfer work?
- Remove and return plates
Remove the plates from the car prior to it being towed. If another vehicle is purchased within 30 days, the plates can be put on that vehicle, provided the fees are paid on the replacement vehicle. If a replacement vehicle is not purchased, turn the plates in to the county treasurer. Find the office nearest you.
- Notice of sale
Complete a notice of sale and submit it to your county treasurer.
- Stop insurance
Cancel your insurance once your car has been towed.
- Get a Refund or credit for unused registration fee
If a replacement vehicle is not purchased, the unused registration fees may be refunded if:
a) the remaining unused registration fee is $10 or more;
b) the registration plates are turned in for the vehicle
c) a claim for refund is filed within six months of the date the vehicle was donated.
The Claim for Refund form must be submitted to the county treasurer's office in any county.
If a replacement vehicle is purchased within 30 days a credit may be due for the unused registration fee on the old vehicle. To obtain a credit for unused registration fees:
a) Apply for title on the replacement vehicle within 30 days after donating the old vehicle.
b) Transfer the plates from the vehicle donated to the replacement vehicle.

There are two owners listed on the title, do we both need to sign?
Yes, both owners will need to sign the title.
Can I donate a car if the owner isn’t able to sign title?
Yes. You can donate the car as long as someone has power of attorney for the titled owner.In IA, we will need an original proof of address.

How can I donate my car without a title?
We can usually pick up a vehicle without a title in Iowa. We just need the registered owner to sign some paperwork for us.

There is an OR between our names, do both owners need to sign the title?
In IA, if there are two owners on the title with an OR between their names, only one owner needs to sign.
Can I donate a car in a deceased person’s name?
In most states, we will need original executive paperwork and a copy of the death certificate. In some states, the donor will need to get it titled in his name.
Can I donate an abandoned, junk, or scrapped car?
Kars4Kids does not accept abandoned cars. We can take cars that were salvaged or junked.
How can I replace my missing title?
If there is no title, Kars4Kids can usually apply for a duplicate title. To apply for a duplicate title complete the Application for Replacement of Iowa Certificate of Title to a Motor Vehicle (Form 411033) and submit it to the county treasurer's office where your title was first issued.
