Information to keep in mind before junking your vehicle
If you plan on junking your motor vehicle and no longer want to keep the old car on your insurance policy, then there are a couple of things you’re going to want to know.
Transfer title
After you transfer your title to the salvage dealer to be canceled, you’ll want to surrender your tags.
According to the FLHSMV, you can surrender your registration to “a local Florida tax collector’s office, a license plate agency, or a local driver’s license office.”
Get your receipt
You can find your closest tax collector’s office, and receive a receipt from them on the spot.
Give receipt to insurance agent
Provide your insurance agent with the receipt, and they should be able to cancel your policy.
Surrender your tags to the State of Florida
The only way you’ll be able to cancel your policy is if you surrender your tags to the State of Florida.
Otherwise, you face the risk of license suspension.
If you’re junking your vehicle through a donation program, then the charity will take care of junking your vehicle, transferring your title, and surrendering your tags.
If you’re doing things on your own, then you’ll have to take care of it yourself.
You can also surrender your tags by mail.
You’ll need to include your registration and a written statement that explains why you’re interested in surrendering the plates.
You’ll mail it to:
Division of Motorist Services
2900 Apalachee Pkwy
Mail Stop 98
Tallahassee, FL 32399
