Can you donate a car without registration?
For whatever reason, one could be missing or have lost their car registration.
It could be expired, lost, or absent by any other means.
Kars4Kids requires proof of ownership on donated cars for legal purposes, but as a general rule, an expired registration or an insurance card is fine.
So even if you don’t have an active registration, you can usually still donate your car to us.
All you need is legal proof of ownership.
What vehicle registration is, and how to get it
Vehicle registration is essentially what connects your car to you.
It’s a form that varies from state to state, and the acquiring of it differs from state to state as well.
Many states allow you to register your car online.
Some have you do it at the DMV.
How to get it
- On the form, you might be asked for a driver’s license or an ID
- Proof of insurance
- Proof of sales tax payment
- A car title
- Proof of a passed safety inspection
Again, though, it depends on where you live.
The difference between a title and registration
Vehicle registration
- Vehicle registration is a form proving that your vehicle is safe to drive on the road, and that you have paid the proper fees and taxes for it.
- Vehicle registration has an expiry date.
Title
- A title is the legal form that makes you the owner of a vehicle.
- Titles don't have an expiry date.
Some states issue a single form for vehicle registration and title application.
