The Slow Poke
Slow and overly cautious, other drivers often get frustrated by Slow Poke's unhurried pace and delayed decisions.
Tips:
- Remember that you are not the only driver on the road.
- Make an effort to keep up with the normal flow of traffic.
- Avoid roads with high speed limits that are above your comfort level.
- If you're driving somewhere unfamiliar, prepare well before you head out so you won't have to figure out directions or confusing turns on the fly.
- Pay attention to the cars around and behind you. Try to stay to the right, and if you see that you are slowing traffic down below the speed limit and are not comfortable increasing your speed, pull over and let the other cars get ahead of you if possible.
King of the Road
With an "I own the road" attitude, the King of the Road tends to drive aggressively and may be prone to road rage.
Tips:
- Remember driving is not a competition and the highway is not a race track. The road is not the right venue to show off your speed and strength, no matter how sure you are that you can handle any situation.
- When another driver does something that irritates you, like cutting you off, don't take it personally - it's almost always not meant to be. Reacting negatively to another driver's actions is not worth the time and energy on your part, especially when it gets in the way of safe driving. Stay calm by listening to relaxing music and rolling down the windows to give you fresh air. Use cruise control as much as possible.
The Daredevil
An Evel Knievel wannabe, the Daredevil is self-absorbed and a reckless risk-taker.
Tips:
- You're not immortal. And if your own life is not worth enough to you, remember you're not the only one on the road - your careless driving often puts others at risk too.
- The rules of the road are there for your safety. Before you break one, think: is there a compelling enough reason for me to do this that it's worth being fined, jailed or having my license suspended?
- Always maintain a safe following distance and quell your inner NASCAR driver by setting your cruise control to an appropriate speed.
- You may benefit from a defensive driving course.
The Multitasker
Always in a rush, the Multitasker is often trying to do more than just drive when behind the wheel.
Tips:
- Your life may be busy and overscheduled but it's extremely dangerous to multitask while driving. Don't plan on using your drive for anything but driving.
- Schedule enough time for your drive - including anticipated traffic! - so you won't need to rush.
- Listen to relaxing music to calm yourself and relieve anxiety during the drive.
-
Be conscious of the image you are portraying to your passengers. Would you countenance such behavior in someone else?
- Remember that nothing you need to do is more important than staying safe.
The Scatterbrain
Oblivious of other drivers and road conditions, there is always something distracting the Scatterbrain from safe driving.
Tips:
- Distracted driving is a leading cause of traffic injuries and fatalities. Ask yourself: Is whatever you are doing worth the risk of death?
- Driving is about interacting with and anticipating the actions of other drivers on the road. You need to stay fully focused in order to be prepared for changing road conditions and other drivers' reactions.
- Minimize distractions as much as possible. Turn off your phone or turn it to silent.
- You may benefit from a defensive driving course.
